Hi, discovered the webcomic today and just finished catching up. And here's my crazy theory on it. But first some context

At this point we see Al's thoughts on AI derived from mind emulation. That an exact copy of a mind would re-create that person and in essence be the same person at the point of creation. BUT, everything the copy experiences after that, all the new memories, experiences, and decisions ultimately makes them their own unique and free willed artificial intelligence.

Here we see that Al, unlike Brendan, is uncomfortable with being openly gay. I'm assuming that stems from my thoughts of why he didn't speak with his parents either: they knew and disapproved of his sexual orientation.
Combine that with the rather heavy age difference, Al does not believe that a long term relationship is feasible.

ohumanstar.com/chapter-4-page-20/
In these and various other scenes, we have seen that Al is most comfortable working on projects of his own interest and at his own pace. Brendan is ambitious, dedicated, and hard working. While Al might admire that of Brendan, running a successful, long-term and prosperous company is just not for him.
I see that a prominent theory on the comments is that they had a big fight right before Al died. And I believe that this distinction in motivation and interest along with Al's not wanting of making their relationship public was the catalyst that built up until it exploded. Specially if the limelight shifted to Al like the colonel wanted, something I don't see Al enjoying at all. I'm sure stress worsen his conditioned and the the fight was tipping point.

Since we know the emulation device uses brainwaves to duplicate a mind. Al was still alive for some time after his incident.
To sum up: We know that Al wasn't comfortable with being openly gay and probably didn't have much faith a long term relationship with Brendan was possible. He was definitely not interested nor happy in the direction the company was taken. And it's extremely likely that Al and Brendan had a massive fight before he died.
Now,
ohumanstar.com/chapter-1-page-8/
Throughout the comic, the ballerina has been shown to be Al's go to project, his constant in the years when everything around him kept changing. Also, the chauffeur (Dog? Giraffe?) is based on a design he made when he was 9. To me it sounds like creating it is a sentimental choice. I doubt he he shared the designs of it professionally, specially when he had over 30 years worth of new and improved models of robots that could be used for Sterling Inc.
Sooooo.... I'm placing all my chips down and betting that Al did not die. He's been alive all this time. Yes, he coughed up quite bit of blood but there's a chance of it not having permanent damage. And as long as his kidneys didn't fry, this particular auto-immune disease is treatable and the survival rate is actually pretty high. The scene of him "dying" in the hospital wasn't shown and I believe it's intentional.
Who else would choose to pick up Al 2.0 with the ballerina and dog/giraffe? Who else would would use the robot making techniques only Al and Brendan used pre Sterling Inc? Who else would want to bring back mid 4o-ish year old Al and drop him off at Bernard's home who is now likely in his 40s himself, giving both of them a second chance. Who else would have the vision and talent to perfect the mind emulation technology (assuming Deus Ex Machina isn't used)?
Real Al simply couldn't stay with Bernard. He chose to let Bernard think he died, let him enjoy his youth and ambition without letting an old man who does not share his vision slow him down. Al while he lives a calmer, simpler life tinkering with his own projects. But why not let their relationship have a second chance after enough time has passed, when Bernard is both about to retire (remember he wants to step down as CEO) and happens to be the same age he once was.
That's it, I'm done. That's my crazy theory.
P.S. I'm sure that raises other questions too. Like how did he get the funding to make such an advance robo-replica of himself. But I'm sure he found a way.
